HM Inspectorate of Prosecution in Scotland (IPS) is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your information in line with the Data Protection Act 2018. Any personal data collected through this website will be treated as confidential in line with the principles of the Data Protection Act 2018.
This privacy notice explains in detail the types of personal data we may collect about you when you interact with us. It also explains how we will store and handle that data, and keep it safe. It is likely we will need to update the privacy notice from time to time. We will publicise any significant changes but you are welcome to ask us questions about the notice or check the online version at any time.
Privacy commitment
We will comply with data protection law. This says that the personal information we hold about you must be:

- Collected only for valid purposes that we have clearly explained to you and not used in any way that is incompatible with those purposes
- Relevant to the purposes we have told you about and limited only to those purposes
- Accurate and kept up to date
- Kept only as long as necessary for the purposes we have told you about

Responding to consultations and surveys
We sometimes carry out surveys and consultations to inform our inspections or to help us improve our service. When you respond to a consultation or a survey, the responses will be analysed and we may publish a report of that analysis. We will only collect personal information when necessary. However we will not publish personal information that may identify you. For example, we will never publish your name or address but we may publish non-identifying information such as your age or occupation where this is relevant to the analysis. We will only include this personal data where permission has been given to do so. Personal information will be destroyed in line with Data Protection law and our privacy commitment. When carrying out surveys, we may use a third party service such as SurveyMonkey.
Signing up to email alerts
We collect your email address when you sign up to our email alerts. We use Mailchimp as our marketing platform for email alerts. By clicking to subscribe, you acknowledge that your information will be transferred to Mailchimp for processing. Learn more about Mailchimp's privacy practices here.
Website analytics
General traffic data is collected on the website via google analytics. Any statistics produced are based on aggregated data from which no details of any individual visitor can be traced. The site does not automatically capture or store personal data from visitors to the site other than to record session information such as the most popular pages visited and the nature of the browser used. This information is used only for the administration of the site system and in the compilation of general statistics used by us to assess the use of the site.

Your rights
You have a right of access to any personal data we hold about you, by making a Subject Access Request (SAR). In addition, if you believe that the data we hold is inaccurate or incomplete you can ask us to update our records. If you are unhappy with the way in which we process your personal data you can request that we stop or restrict the processing we complete using your personal data or ask us to delete the personal data we hold about you.

Complaints relating to data protection
